Adam McFarlane - Producer
As producer of Due North, I handle multiple tasks. Producing a show is like building a house. You have to start with a great foundation.
That foundation begins with having the privilege of viewing many great stories and deciding which of those stories will “make the cut”. This proves to be the biggest challenge as our photojournalists shoot great stories all year.
Once the stories are selected for a season of Due North, it’s time to match them up on an episode. Ideally we would like to have a solid mix of hunting, fishing and outdoor stories for each episode.
After a season’s worth of episodes are “stacked”, it’s time to write for each individual episode. When writing the opening of a show, it is important that the viewer can see what the stories are, without giving everything away. This is also important for the “teases”, which are used to tell the viewers what is coming up after the break.
It is then the job of the producer to set up time and locations for “raps”. Raps are Bill and/or Laura welcoming you to the show, welcoming you back to the show, or saying goodbye at the end of the show.
After everything is shot and edited, I fill out a rundown and give it to our editor, Nick Clausen. This is a guide for him to put the whole episode together. If I start the foundation, Nick nails in the last shingle on the roof of the house. Nick also designed the logo for the show and plays a big part in the shows success.
As we enter our 3rd season we look forward to continue bringing you stories featuring the people, places and pursuits of the Midwest outdoor lifestyle. Keep your compass set, Due North!
